Google Ads for restaurants: buy catering, not tables

Google Ads works for a restaurant when the click is buying an order big enough to pay for it: office and corporate catering, private dining, holiday parties, and direct online orders that would otherwise pay a delivery app 15% to 30%. A dine-in table found through "restaurants near me" is usually worth too little to buy one click at a time, and Google Maps and your Business Profile already compete for that search. Eloari runs restaurant ad accounts for a flat fee from $900 a month, month to month, with every account in your restaurant's name.

  • Budget pointed at catering, events and direct orders first.
  • Calls, reservations and catering inquiries tracked, not clicks.
  • Tracking installed and verified before any spend begins.
  • Flat fee from $900 a month, never a percentage of spend.

01 — What is different

What makes Google Ads different for a restaurant?

A restaurant sells a low-ticket product many times, on thin margins. The National Restaurant Association projects $1.55 trillion in U.S. restaurant and foodservice sales for 2026, yet 42% of operators said their restaurant was not profitable the year before (NRA, February 2026). Ad money has to come out of the orders with room in them.

Six things only a restaurant account has:

The cheapest clicks are worth the least

"Restaurants near me" gets about 101 million U.S. searches a month at a top bid of $2.33 (Keyword Planner, October 28, 2026). One table rarely pays for the clicks it takes to win it.

Maps decides "near me" searches

Diners pick from the map, photos and reviews. Your Business Profile does that work for free.

Catering is a different business

An office lunch or holiday party is one order worth hundreds or thousands, bought by someone who plans ahead.

Delivery apps set your ceiling

Every order moved from an app to your own site keeps a 15% to 30% commission. That saving is what a direct-order click can be worth.

Alcohol changes the rules

Meta allows alcohol ads in the U.S. only to people 21 and older, and Google keeps alcohol out of some ad formats.

The calendar is the plan

Thanksgiving, December parties and Mother's Day are booked weeks ahead. Ads that start the week of the event start late.

Cover is one guest served. Average check is what a table or guest spends per visit. Top-of-page bid is Google's estimate of what advertisers have paid to show above the organic results. Cost per lead is ad spend divided by the calls, forms or bookings it produced. Location asset is the address extension that lets a Google ad show your pin and directions, including on Maps.

02 — Click prices

What does a Google Ads click cost for a restaurant?

Restaurant clicks are among the cheapest on Google: the 2026 average for Restaurants & Food was $2.05 per click and $30.57 per lead, against $5.42 and $66.69 across all industries (LocaliQ, June 2026). The expensive restaurant clicks are catering: "corporate event catering" reached a top bid of $28.89 and "office catering" $23.08 in October 2026 (Google Keyword Planner).

U.S. monthly searches and Google's top-of-page bid range, Keyword Planner, October 28, 2026:

SearchMonthly searchesTop-of-page bid
restaurants near me101,000,000$0.50 – $2.33
pizza near me11,100,000$0.68 – $2.34
brunch near me2,240,000$0.40 – $1.71
food delivery near me550,000$1.84 – $7.06
catering near me135,000$1.19 – $5.61
wedding catering18,100$0.88 – $3.70
private dining rooms near me2,900$1.08 – $4.87
lunch catering near me5,400$2.25 – $12.16
corporate catering3,600$4.29 – $20.11
holiday party venues720$3.50 – $19.72
office lunch catering880$4.14 – $21.77
office catering1,000$4.55 – $23.08
corporate event catering1,000$4.62 – $28.89

Office and corporate catering cost ten times a dinner search because one office can become a standing order. "Wedding catering" is the outlier: 18,100 searches a month at no more than $3.70. Volumes are 12-month averages, so holiday searches run higher in November and December.

03 — The math

How much can a restaurant afford to pay per click?

The most you can pay for a click is the order value × your margin × the share of inquiries that book × the share of clicks that inquire. With an assumed 30% margin and the 8.05% restaurant conversion rate (LocaliQ, 2026), a $60 table for two can pay about $0.72 a click, while a $2,600 holiday party can pay about $15.70.

OrderAssumed valueMax per inquiryMax per click
Table for two (half of inquiries show up)$60$9.00$0.72
Office lunch, 25 people at $16 (3 in 10 book)$400$36.00$2.90
The same office, six orders over the year$2,400$216.00$17.39
Holiday party, 40 guests at $65 (1 in 4 book)$2,600$195.00$15.70
Wedding, 120 guests at $45 (3 in 20 book)$5,400$243.00$19.56

Order values, the 30% margin after food, packaging and direct labor, and booking rates are assumptions; use your own. Two things hold anyway. One office lunch can't pay a $21.77 click, but an office that reorders can, so judge catering on accounts won. And a table for two only works at the bottom of the bid range, so dine-in money usually goes to the Business Profile, reviews and Meta.

04 — Delivery apps

Should a restaurant pay for ads to beat DoorDash and Uber Eats commissions?

Only up to the commission you save. DoorDash charges 15%, 25% or 30% on delivery orders placed in its app (Basic, Plus, Premier; DoorDash merchant pricing, October 2026), and Uber Eats raised its Lite tier from 15% to 20% in March 2026 (Restaurant Dive, March 10, 2026). On a $40 order that is $6 to $12 a direct order can keep.

App plan (2026)CommissionKept on a $40 direct order
DoorDash Basic15%$6, before your own delivery and card costs
Uber Eats Lite20%$8
DoorDash Plus / Uber Eats Plus25%$10 (Uber One member orders on Uber Eats Plus: 30%)
DoorDash Premier / Uber Eats Premium30%$12

Bid on your restaurant's name plus "order online" or "delivery," and send the click to your own ordering page. Don't buy generic "food delivery near me" clicks at up to $7.06 to save $6. The apps still bring new diners; the ad's job is to move your regulars.

05 — The setup

How should a restaurant set up its Google Ads account?

Separate campaigns by what the order is worth, and count only what makes money: calls, reservations, online orders and catering inquiries. Count menu views and Google will optimize for people who browse and never buy.

StepWhereWhat happens
1. Fix the profile firstGoogle Business ProfileHours, holiday hours, menu, photos and the order and reservation links are right before any ad runs.
2. Track the four actionsGoogle Ads, your booking and ordering toolsCalls from ads, completed reservations, direct online orders and catering forms, each tested with a real submission.
3. Catering gets its own campaignSearchOffice, corporate and event searches, a catering page with a quote form, weekday schedule, a wider radius.
4. Brand plus orderingSearchYour name with "order online," "delivery" and "menu," sent to your own ordering page.
5. Add the location assetAssetsYour address on the ads, so the pin and directions show on Search and Maps.
6. Exclude what never paysNegative keywords"Hiring," "jobs," "coupons," "free" and chain menus. "Restaurants hiring near me" alone gets 90,500 searches a month.
7. Schedule by serviceAd scheduleDinner and order ads before the rush; catering ads during office hours, when the person ordering is at a desk.

For how calls and forms are counted, see Google Ads conversion tracking setup. If the catering page gets clicks and no quotes, the page is the problem; our landing page optimization page lists what to check.

06 — Alcohol

Can a restaurant advertise drinks, happy hour or a bar?

Yes, with limits on both platforms. Meta allows alcohol ads in the United States only to audiences 21 and older, and its policy covers venues that depend on alcohol sales and any ad promoting that alcohol is available (Meta Advertising Standards, October 2026). Google allows alcohol ads in the U.S. but keeps them out of dynamic search ads and Gmail ads (Google Ads policy, October 2026).

RuleGoogle AdsMeta

What countsAds promoting drinks sold on your site or at your locationBars and venues built on alcohol sales, invitations to them, "drinks available"
FormatsNot in dynamic search ads, Gmail ads or app install adsNormal formats, with age targeting set
MessageNo excessive drinking, no health or social-success claimsFollow local law and industry codes

Keep happy hour ads in their own campaign or ad set with the age set, and keep food and catering ads free of alcohol so they reach everyone. State alcohol advertising laws apply on top.

07 — The calendar

When should a restaurant spend most of its ad budget?

In the weeks before the dates people book ahead. "Restaurants open on Thanksgiving" averages 110,000 U.S. searches a month and "thanksgiving dinner to go" 5,400, with Google rating competition for the second as high, 92 out of 100 (Keyword Planner, October 28, 2026). Holiday party and catering searches peak in November and early December.

Put Thanksgiving-to-go and holiday party ads live in early November, with a clear booking deadline. Raise the catering budget before the dine-in budget, since those order sizes carry December's prices. And set holiday hours in your Business Profile, so a paid click doesn't land on a closed door.

08 — Meta

Where do Facebook and Instagram ads fit for a restaurant?

Meta is where a restaurant creates demand: food sells on sight, and a local audience is cheap to reach. Restaurant traffic campaigns on Facebook averaged $0.45 per click in 2026, against $0.60 across all industries (LocaliQ, September 2026). Use it for openings, new menus, events and regulars; use Google for people already searching.

10 — Pricing

How much does Google Ads management cost for a restaurant?

Typical U.S. agency pricing is a flat retainer of $1,000 to $5,000 a month for small and mid-sized accounts, or 10% to 20% of ad spend, most often 15%, plus setup fees of $2,500 to $10,000 (Eloari, main page, October 2026). Eloari charges a flat fee from $900 a month, with no setup fee, no percentage and no markup on media.

TierMonthly feeSuited to
Starter$900/moAd spend under $5,000/mo
Growth$1,500/moAd spend $5,000–$20,000/mo
Full$2,500/moAd spend $20,000+/mo

Paid search generally needs $2,000 to $3,000 a month to produce reliable data, and the fee should be judged against the whole budget: at $2,000 of spend, $900 is 31% of what is put to work (Eloari, main page). That makes sense for a restaurant with catering, private events, several locations or a direct-ordering business, where one customer is worth several hundred dollars. A single dining room without those usually does better with its Business Profile and a small Meta budget. You pay Google and Meta directly, own every account and conversion history, and can leave with thirty days' notice.

12 — Questions

Google Ads for restaurants: questions

Do Google Ads work for restaurants?

Yes, for orders big enough to pay for the click: catering, private dining, holiday parties and direct online orders. For a single dine-in table, the Business Profile and Maps usually do the job for less. Restaurant clicks averaged $2.05 and leads $30.57 in 2026 (LocaliQ).

How much should a restaurant spend on Google Ads?

Most U.S. businesses need $2,000 to $3,000 a month for paid search to produce reliable data (Eloari, main page). A restaurant should put that budget on catering and event searches and its own name first, and size it from what an order is worth, not from a round daily number.

What is the best type of Google ad for a restaurant?

A Search campaign for catering and events, a brand campaign that sends "order online" searches to your own ordering page, and a location asset so your pin and directions show with the ads. Keep dine-in spend small and judge it by calls and directions, not clicks.

Are Google Ads or Facebook ads better for a restaurant?

They do different jobs. Google catches people already searching, such as an office manager looking for catering. Facebook and Instagram create demand for a new menu, an opening or an event, at about $0.45 a click for restaurant traffic campaigns (LocaliQ, September 2026).

Can a restaurant advertise alcohol on Facebook and Google?

Yes, with limits. Meta only allows alcohol ads to people 21 and older in the U.S., and Google keeps alcohol out of formats such as dynamic search ads and Gmail ads and bans targeting minors. Keep drink promotions in their own campaign so food ads reach everyone.

How do I get more catering orders with Google Ads?

Give catering its own campaign, a page with a quote form and a phone number, and a weekday schedule. Bid on office, corporate and event searches, which reached top bids of $20 to $29 in October 2026 (Keyword Planner), and judge them on offices that reorder.
