Landing page optimization for Google and Meta ads, judged by cost per lead

Landing page optimization is the work of getting more of the people who click your ad to call you or fill out your form. For a business that pays for clicks, it is a cost-per-lead job, not a design job: your cost per lead is your cost per click divided by your page's conversion rate, and the page controls the second number. Across 41,000+ landing pages, the median converted 6.6% of visitors (Unbounce, 2024 Conversion Benchmark Report).

  • First check which page Google is actually sending people to.
  • Count calls and forms as two separate conversions.
  • Change one big thing at a time, with the traffic you already pay for.

01 — The short answer

What is landing page optimization?

Landing page optimization means changing the page your ad sends people to so more of them call or fill out a form, then measuring the change in cost per lead. The page barely moves the click price. It decides how many clicks you get to talk to.

Landing page

The page someone sees right after clicking your ad: home page, service page or a page built for ads.

Conversion rate

The share of visitors who call you or fill out your form. 5 forms from 100 clicks is a 5% conversion rate.

Cost per lead

What you paid in clicks for each call or form. It equals cost per click divided by conversion rate.

Message match

The page repeats the promise, the service and the call to action of the ad that was clicked.

Final URL expansion

A Google setting that lets the campaign send a click to a different page on your site than the one you chose.

Core Web Vitals

Google's page experience measures: loading (LCP), response to taps (INP) and layout shift (CLS).

02 — What it is worth

How much does a better landing page lower your cost per lead?

Two more conversions per hundred clicks cut a home improvement company's cost per lead from $90.92 to about $72.83, a 20% drop, at the same click price. The lower your conversion rate today, the more each point is worth: in real estate, where search ads convert at 3.70%, the same two points cut cost per lead by about 35% (LocaliQ benchmarks, updated 1 June 2026; Eloari math).

Industry (U.S. search ads)Avg. cost per clickAvg. conversion rateAvg. cost per leadCost per lead at +2 points

Home and home improvement$8.338.05%$90.92$72.83 (−20%)

Real estate$3.223.70%$102.51$66.54 (−35%)
Business services$5.874.85%$93.69$66.34 (−29%)
Personal services$7.1712.34%$54.60$46.98 (−14%)
Auto repair and service$4.3515.51%$29.96$26.54 (−11%)

The alternative is buying more clicks. To get 20% more leads from the same page, you need about 20% more budget. That is why Eloari calls conversion rate work "cheaper than buying more clicks". For what clicks cost trade by trade, see how much Google Ads costs.

03 — Before you edit anything

Which landing page is Google actually sending your clicks to?

Maybe not the one you built. Final URL expansion is on by default in Performance Max, and turning on AI Max in a Search campaign turns it on too, so Google can send a click to any page on your site it judges more relevant (Google Ads Help, October 2026).

Campaign typeFinal URL expansionWhere to see the pagesHow to control it
Performance MaxOn by defaultAsset reporting, "Expanded Final URL assets" tabAsset optimization → Text customization → "Exclude some URLs", or turn it off to use only your own URLs.
Search with AI MaxTurned on with AI Max, can be switched off on its ownLanding pages report, "Selected by" columnCampaign-level URL exclusions. With it on, pinned headlines are ignored.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram)No equivalent: the website URL is the one in the adAds Manager, ad levelInstant Forms open inside the app: the form is the page.

Sources: Google Ads Help, About Final URL expansion in Performance Max and AI Max for Search campaigns, retrieved 20 October 2026. Campaigns that used campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets began moving into AI Max on 1 September 2026; see our Google Ads audit page.

Exclude pages that should never take a paid click (careers, blog posts, login, thank-you pages), then sort the landing pages report by cost. The page at the top is the one to optimize first.

04 — The order of work

How to optimize a landing page for paid ads, in order

Fix measurement before the page, and the page before the test. If calls are not counted, a better headline can look like a failure while the phone rings more.

StepWhereWhat to check, and why it comes here
1. Count every leadConversion goalsCall taps, calls to the page number and forms as separate actions; only real leads primary. Google bids toward primary actions, so without them no change can be judged.
2. Confirm the pageLanding pages reportExpanded URLs and URL exclusions. You optimize the page that gets the money.
3. Match the messageFirst screenIt repeats the ad's service, city, offer and call to action. Google's own advice is to choose a page that "closely matches your ad and keywords".
4. Fix the phoneCellular dataTappable number, visible form, nothing jumping. 83% of landing page visits in Unbounce's data came from mobile devices.
5. Cut frictionWords and formPlain words, fewer form boxes, proof near the button (license, reviews, real jobs). Pages written at a 5th to 7th grade level converted at 11.1%, professional-level pages at 5.3%.
6. Change one big thingOne at a timeOne offer, headline or form at a time, dated, judged on cost per lead. Small accounts rarely have the traffic for clean A/B tests on details (see section 05).

Sources: Google Ads Help, Optimize your ads and landing pages, primary and secondary conversion actions, website call conversions; Unbounce Conversion Benchmark Report (2024). Retrieved 20 October 2026.

For calls from the page, Google can show a free forwarding number on your site and count a call as a conversion once it passes a minimum length you set. Set it too short and robocalls count as leads; too long and quick bookings vanish.

05 — Testing, honestly

Can a small business A/B test its landing page?

Rarely on small details. To tell a 6.6% page from a 7.9% page (a 20% lift) with 95% confidence and 80% power, each version needs about 6,065 visitors, roughly 12,100 paid clicks, which is about $101,000 of clicks at the $8.33 home improvement average. A 50% lift needs about 2,180 clicks in total.

Page todayLift you want to detectVisitors per versionClick cost at $8.33Click cost at $5.42
4.0%+20% (to 4.8%)10,316$171,900$111,800
6.6%+20% (to 7.9%)6,065$101,000$65,700
6.6%+50% (to 9.9%)1,090$18,200$11,800

Eloari's calculation: two-proportion sample size, two-sided, 95% confidence, 80% power. Baseline from Unbounce (2024); click prices from LocaliQ (June 2026).

So at $3,000 a month, do not split traffic to test a button color. Test changes that can move results a lot (a new offer, a shorter form, a page that matches the ad), one at a time, and compare cost per lead over comparable weeks.

06 — Speed

How fast does a landing page need to be?

Google's "good" bar for Core Web Vitals is a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, an Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits (web.dev, retrieved 20 October 2026). A February 2017 Google analysis found 53% of mobile visitors left pages slower than three seconds.

Usual culprits on ad pages: a huge hero video, chat widgets and pop-ups, and late banners that push the button down.

07 — What the top guides skip

Why most landing page optimization advice does not fit a local business

The pages ranking for "landing page optimization" are written for online stores and software. In a read of the top results on 20 October 2026, none covered phone calls as conversions, Google's final URL expansion, cost per lead, or how much traffic a test needs. Shopify (27 July 2026) writes for stores; Omniconvert (19 August 2026) mentions significance without numbers; the rest are glossaries.

Pages read on 20 October 2026: shopify.com, omniconvert.com.

Demand for the help is real. In the United States, "conversion rate optimization agency" gets about 1,300 searches a month and "landing page optimization" about 390, with top-of-page bids up to $80.00 and $25.06 (Google Keyword Planner, 20 October 2026).

09 — How Eloari does it

What Eloari's landing page optimization includes

Eloari's conversion rate optimization is landing page structure, offer wording and form design tested against the traffic you already pay for, run by the same person who runs your ads. Ad copy and landing page copy are written in house, in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Eloari does not build websites or sell design retainers: the work is the page your ads land on.

10 — Fit

Do you need landing page optimization or something else first?

You need it when the right searches click and too few become calls or forms. If the clicks are wrong, fix the account first.

Your situationWhat it usually meansVerdict
Good searches, few leadsThe page loses people after the click.Optimize the landing page.
Report shows conversions, phone is quietPage views or button taps are counted as leads.Fix tracking first.
Search terms you would never chooseThe account buys the wrong clicks.Run a Google Ads audit first.
Mostly Facebook Instant Form leadsThere is no page; the form is the page.Optimize the form and the follow-up.

Wrong clicks? Start with the Google Ads audit. Leads from Meta? See Facebook Ads management. Home service leads from the top of Google come through Local Services Ads, which have no landing page at all.

11 — Pricing

How much does landing page optimization cost at Eloari?

Landing page testing is part of ad management on the Growth ($1,500 a month) and Full ($2,500 a month) tiers, not a separate invoice. Every tier is a flat monthly fee, no setup fee, month to month, never a percentage of ad spend, and the review to start is free.

TierMonthly ad spendFlat feeIncludes
StarterUnder $5,000$900/moGoogle or Meta, conversion tracking, ad copy, monthly report
Growth$5,000 – $20,000$1,500/moGoogle or Meta, call tracking, landing page testing, ad copy, biweekly review
Full$20,000+$2,500/moGoogle and Meta, full tracking stack, landing page testing, weekly review

Why a flat fee matters here: under a percentage-of-spend fee, a page that converts worse makes the agency's fee grow when the budget is raised to cover it. With a flat fee, a better page simply lowers your cost. You own every ad account, pixel and conversion history.

14 — Questions

Landing page optimization questions

What is landing page optimization?

It is changing the page your ad sends people to so more of them call or fill out your form. For paid traffic it is measured in cost per lead, which equals cost per click divided by conversion rate. The median landing page converts 6.6% of visitors (Unbounce, 2024).

What is a good landing page conversion rate?

Across 41,000+ pages in Unbounce's 2024 report, the median was 6.6%, with nine highlighted industries ranging from 3.8% to 12.3%. Compare your page against your own past cost per lead, not one benchmark.

Should my Google Ads go to my home page or a landing page?

Send each ad to the page that matches its service and offer most closely, which Google itself recommends. If you run Performance Max or AI Max, also check which pages Google picked on its own.

How much does landing page optimization cost?

At Eloari, landing page testing is included in ad management on the Growth ($1,500 a month) and Full ($2,500 a month) tiers, with no setup fee and never a percentage of ad spend. The first account review is free.

How long does it take to see results from landing page changes?

You need enough leads to compare, which usually means several weeks at a small budget. Eloari makes first decisions between day 21 and day 30; real cost-per-lead gains usually show in month two or three.

Does landing page speed affect Google Ads?

Yes. Google's Ad Rank considers the quality of your ads and landing page, and a slow page loses visitors before they see the offer. Aim for loading in 2.5 seconds or less and taps answered in 200 milliseconds or less.

Do I need a landing page for Facebook ads?

Not always. Meta's Instant Forms open inside Facebook or Instagram, so the form replaces the page. When people need prices or service areas before they call, a landing page usually earns better leads.
