Meta pixel not working? Fix it by what you see

When your Meta pixel isn't working, match the symptom to the cause before you reinstall anything. No badge in Meta's browser extension means no pixel on that page. Page views with no leads usually mean the form lives in an embed from another site. Leads that look too cheap usually mean each one is counted twice. A missing Lead event on a health or wellness site can be Meta's own data restriction. And Instant Form and phone leads never reach the pixel at all.

  • Eight symptoms you can see, and the cause behind each.
  • Why embedded booking and form tools never send the lead.
  • What Meta now blocks on health and wellness sites.

01 — The terms

What is the Meta pixel, and what does "not working" usually mean?

The Meta pixel is a short piece of code from Meta that sits on your website and reports what visitors do to your Facebook and Instagram ad account. "Not working" covers three different problems: the pixel doesn't load, it loads but sends the wrong events, or it was never able to see the lead in the first place. Reinstalling fixes only the first.

"Meta pixel" gets about 4,400 Google searches a month in the U.S. (Google Keyword Planner, October 22, 2026), and most guides stop at getting the pixel to show "Active." A pixel can be Active and still teach Meta to find the wrong people, which costs more.

Event: one report the pixel sends, such as a page view or a lead. Lead event: the event that tells Meta someone sent your form. Events Manager: the part of your Meta account that lists your pixel and every event it receives. Conversions API: a second way to send the same events, from your server or software instead of the visitor's browser. Core Setup: a Meta data restriction that strips URL details and custom data from a pixel's events.

02 — By symptom

Why is my Meta pixel not working? Eight symptoms and their causes

Start from what you can see, not from the code. Work top to bottom: each check only means something once the one above it passes.

Meta says events should be verifiable "within 20 minutes after they were sent" (Meta for Developers, read October 29, 2026), so test, wait, then judge. If tracking broke this week, look first at what changed on the site.

03 — Is it there

How do I check if my Meta pixel is firing?

Open each page that matters with Meta Ads Data Advisor, the Chrome extension formerly called Meta Pixel Helper. Meta's developer guide says that if the icon has no badge, no pixel is installed on that page, and a number on the badge shows how many events fired (Meta for Developers, read October 29, 2026). Check every service page, the form and the thank-you page.

The same guide says to use one conversion event per page, unless a button click triggers the extra one. A Lead event in the site-wide header breaks that on every page. The extension also shows every pixel ID it finds; if one isn't in your own Events Manager, it reports to someone else's account.

04 — Embedded forms

Why doesn't the pixel track my embedded form or booking calendar?

Because the form isn't really on your page. Tools such as Calendly, Jotform or Typeform usually load inside an iframe, a window into another company's website, and your pixel can't see inside it. Page views arrive; the lead never does.

NeetoCal's help center says the website holding the embed needs "a Meta Pixel of its own," and that without it "embedded bookings will not be tracked, and nothing will warn you" (read October 29, 2026). Browsers also block tracking cookies inside a frame that belongs to another site.

OptionNeedsWhat to do
1. Redirect to your thank-you pageTool redirectsFire the Lead event only on a thank-you page on your domain.
2. Use the tool's Meta integrationPixel fieldEnter the same pixel ID your website uses.
3. Send from the serverCRM linkThe CRM sends the lead to Meta through the Conversions API.
4. Test itAlwaysSend a real test form from your phone and find it in Events Manager.

A tool that fires the lead when the calendar loads, not when the booking is made, is the reverse problem: Meta gets credit for people who only looked. A native form on your own landing page avoids both; see landing page optimization.

05 — Counted twice

Why does Meta show more leads than I actually got?

Usually because each lead is reported twice, once by the browser pixel and once by the Conversions API, without a shared event ID. Meta merges the two only when the event name and the event ID match and both arrive within 48 hours (Meta for Developers, October 2026). Otherwise ten real leads show as about twenty.

In Events Manager, click your Lead event. The Overview shows events "before they are deduplicated," so don't count there; open the Event Deduplication tab instead. If both channels send leads and that rate sits near zero, you are probably counting twice. The setup is on our conversion tracking page.

Don't drop the Conversions API to fix it. Meta reported on April 15, 2026 that advertisers with a web Conversions API setup saw an average 17.8% lower cost per result than those without it: Meta's own average, not a promise.

06 — Health and wellness

Can Meta block my pixel's lead events?

Yes. Since 2025, Meta has placed some health and wellness websites in restricted categories and limited which events and details their pixels can share (Freshpaint, February 3, 2025). The lightest level, Core Setup, removes the part of the URL after the domain, including UTM tags, and custom event details; heavier levels can block the Lead event itself (Stape, March 2, 2026). Stape adds that the Conversions API does not get around these rules.

Level, as described by StapeWhat Meta removes or blocksWhat the owner sees
Mild (Core Setup)URL after the domain, UTM tags, custom parametersEvents arrive; URL-based audiences fill slowly or stop
ModerateStandard events such as Lead and PurchaseLead is restricted; lead campaigns stop delivering
SevereAll event sharing from the site, in certain regionsNothing arrives, though the pixel loads

We found no Meta Help Center page listing these tiers, so treat them as reported by third parties. Open your pixel's Settings tab to see the category Meta assigned, keep condition and treatment names out of URLs, UTM tags and event names, and request a review if the category is wrong; Freshpaint reports appeals can be repeated every 30 days. 07 — The five checks on video

What do the five pixel checks look like on a real site?

Jonatã Ariel Silveira runs five checks on a made-up clinic whose pixel shows Active and still reports the wrong things: a Lead event in the site header, each booking counted twice, server events without email and phone, and Instant Form leads the pixel never sees.

Meta Pixel Not Working? 5 Checks Before You Spend More. Eloari, October 25, 2026 (12 min). The clinic is an example we made up.

Check four is Event Match Quality, Meta's score out of 10 for the customer detail sent with server events. Meta lists email and phone among the high-quality details (Meta for Developers, October 2026), so ask whoever set up your Conversions API to send both, hashed, with every Lead.

08 — Leads it never sees

Does the Meta pixel track Instant Form leads and phone calls?

No. An Instant Form opens inside Facebook or Instagram, so the person never reaches your website and your pixel never runs. A call from your ad or your site is invisible to a browser pixel too. For many local businesses those are a large share of the leads, so a pixel can be perfect and still miss them.

Compare Instant Form leads in Leads Center with your CRM weekly, and download them soon: Meta says leads expire 90 days after the form is sent (Meta Business Help, October 2026). A phone sale from a website lead goes back to Meta as an offline event, to be uploaded within 62 days of the conversion (Meta for Developers, October 2026). Not ready? Mark paying customers in a spreadsheet; see our Facebook ads cost guide.

09 — The order

What should I fix first?

Fix what Meta learns from before you change what you spend. A dead pixel costs less than one that counts the wrong things, because Meta spends your budget finding more people like the ones it was told converted.

About 32.5% of Americans use ad blockers (GWI, Q2 2025, in DataReportal's Digital 2026 report), so the browser pixel will never count every lead. Judge Meta by your CRM. Still choosing a channel? Read Google Ads vs Facebook Ads.

13 — Questions

Meta pixel not working: questions

Why does my Meta pixel say Active but my leads don't match?

Active only means some events arrive. The Lead event may fire on every page, the pixel and Conversions API may count each lead twice without a shared event ID, or your leads may come from Instant Forms and calls the pixel never sees.

How do I test if my Meta pixel is working?

Open each key page with Meta Ads Data Advisor, the Chrome extension formerly called Meta Pixel Helper; no badge means no pixel on that page. Then send a real test form and look for that one lead in Events Manager. Meta says events should be verifiable within 20 minutes.

Why is my Meta pixel not tracking form submissions?

Most often the form is embedded from another site, such as a booking or form tool loaded in an iframe, so your pixel can't see the submission. Redirect the form to a thank-you page on your own domain with the Lead event on it, or use the tool's own Meta integration with your pixel ID.

Why is my Lead event restricted in Events Manager?

Meta has placed some health, wellness and other sensitive websites in restricted categories since 2025. Depending on the level, it strips URL details and custom data or blocks events such as Lead, and the Conversions API doesn't get around it. Check the pixel's Settings tab, clean sensitive words from URLs and event data, and request a review if the category is wrong.

Does the Meta pixel track Instant Form leads?

No. Instant Forms open inside Facebook or Instagram, so the person never reaches your website. Check them in Leads Center and download them within 90 days, when Meta says they expire, and send results back from your CRM.

Do I still need the Conversions API if my pixel works?

Yes for most advertisers: about 32.5% of Americans use ad blockers (GWI, Q2 2025), which stop part of the browser pixel. Send both with a shared event ID so leads aren't counted twice.
