Google Ads for auto repair shops: pay for cars in the bay, not calls

Google Ads works for an auto repair shop when you bid by job and measure cost per closed repair order, not cost per call. Open technician hours should cap the budget, because a booked-out shop pays for calls it can't serve. The lead price alone won't guide you: an oil change lead and a transmission lead both cost a median $34.81 in the U.S. (LocaliQ, April 2025 to June 2026).

  • Separate campaigns for a stopped car, a known job and maintenance.
  • Budget tied to the technician hours you have open.
  • Results judged by closed repair orders, not call counts.
  • Flat fee from $900 a month, never a percentage of spend.

01 — What is different

What makes Google Ads different for an auto repair shop?

A repair shop rarely knows the size of a sale when the phone rings. The caller asks about a noise or an oil change, and the real ticket appears after the inspection. In the 2026 Ratchet+Wrench survey of more than 430 shop owners and managers, the largest group reported finding $1,200 to $1,499 of potential work per car, while the median repair order in the Tekmetric Shop Index was $649.88 (through June 2026).

Tech hours set the ceiling

The average is 2.2 cars per bay per day (PartsTech, cited by Ratchet+Wrench). That is a reference, not your limit.

The phone leaks

Only 58% of calls to automotive businesses, dealers included, reach a person (Invoca, 2026).

States write the ad

California requires your registration number in any internet ad (16 CCR 3371.2).

Repair order (RO) is the invoice for one car's visit. Average repair order (ARO) is your sales divided by those invoices. Car count is the number of repair orders you write in a month.

02 — Price by job

What does a Google Ads lead cost an auto repair shop?

A Google Ads lead for U.S. auto service and repair cost a median $42.10, at $6.42 a click and a 15.39% conversion rate, in LocaliQ's study of 1,983 automotive campaigns from April 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. By job, the median ran from $20.70 for tire and wheel repair to $35.16 for inspection and diagnostics.

Job (LocaliQ category)Cost per clickConversion rateCost per lead
Auto service & repair (general)$6.4215.39%$42.10
Inspection & diagnostics$5.2614.03%$35.16
Transmission & clutch$7.4619.23%$34.81
Oil change & lube$5.3115.44%$34.81
Brake repair & inspection$4.9013.37%$32.46
Tire & wheel repair$3.4618.20%$20.70

No public number gives you cost per booked car. Invoca's 2026 automotive report found that 58% of callers reach a person, 53% of answered calls are leads, and 45% of those leads convert on the call. Its base includes dealers, and LocaliQ may define a lead differently. So the $42.10 lead could mean about $94 (our math, if it is already a real lead: ÷ 0.45) or about $304 (if it is any call: ÷ 0.138). Neither is a measured booking. Divide cost per lead by your own booking rate.

The transmission and oil change rows cost the same per lead, so one bid treats them as equal. Pull your average repair order by job, and move budget to the jobs where the lead is the smallest share of the ticket.

03 — Budget

How much should an auto repair shop spend on Google Ads?

Start near $2,000 to $3,000 a month, the range Eloari considers the minimum for reliable paid search data in the U.S., then let open technician hours set the cap. For the median shop in the Tekmetric Shop Index (97 cars a month at $649.88, about $63,000 in sales), $2,000 in ads is about 3.2% of sales; with Eloari's $900 fee, $2,900 is about 4.6%.

StepYour numberMade-up example
1. Open hoursTech − booked2 techs × 8 hours × 22 days = 352, minus 300 booked = 52 hours
2. Open cars÷ repair time52 ÷ 2.5 = about 20 cars
3. Ad carsBudget ÷ cost per car$2,000 ÷ $94 to $304 = about 7 to 21 cars, an illustration and not a forecast
4. CompareStep 2 vs. step 3The low end fits and the high end is tight, so rerun it with your own rates

The 2.5 hours is the top of the most common answer for time spent on each repair, 2 to 2.5 hours (31% of shops, 2026 Ratchet+Wrench); use your own figure. A simpler check: if your next open appointment is days away, lower maintenance spend first and keep the stopped-car campaign on.

No marketing share is standard. In the same survey, shares of sales for all marketing split: 0% (7% of shops), 1–2% (20%), 3–4% (21%), 5–6% (13%), 7–8% (17%), 9–10% (16%), 11%+ (6%). So 52% spend 5% or more.

04 — Click prices

What does a mechanic click cost near you?

"Mechanic near me" had a top-of-page bid of $2.00 to $7.90 across the U.S., $2.68 to $8.62 in the Miami DMA (both October 17, 2026) and $1.14 to $4.17 in New York City (October 19, 2026), according to Google Keyword Planner. We would look first at wrong searches and unanswered calls, not the bid.

Google Keyword Planner, New York City, October 19, 2026:

SearchMonthly searchesTop-of-page bid
"mechanic near me"18,100$1.14 – $4.17
"auto repair near me"9,900$1.07 – $3.85
"brake repair"5,400$3.63 – $6.30

Top-of-page bid is the range advertisers have bid to appear at the top of results; it is not the price you pay.

05 — False searches

Which searches waste a repair shop's ad budget?

The costly searches look like car searches. In New York City, "ac repair near me" had a top bid of $22.79 against $5.51 for "car ac repair near me" (Keyword Planner, October 19, 2026), a gap we read as home air conditioning owners in the auction. Block each of these with negative keywords, which tell Google not to show your ad for that word.

SearchWhy it leaksWhat to do
"check engine light"O'Reilly reads the light for free on 1996 and newer vehicles, and many drivers only want the code (our reading).Sell a diagnosis, not a scan. Bid on "diagnostic" and "mechanic" wording, and block "free" and "code reader".
"ac repair"Mostly home units, going by the bid gap above (our reading).Use phrase match on "car ac" and "auto ac". Block "home", "unit", "central air" and "central ac".
"car service"In New York it can mean a ride: 12,100 searches a month, and a 2014 City Council budget briefing (FY2015) lists liveries as "also known as Car Services".Block "black car" and "limo". Prefer "car maintenance" wording.
"body shop"Collision is another business, with a $56.26 median lead (LocaliQ).Block "collision", "dent" and "paint" unless you do that work.
Parts and do-it-yourselfNot customers for a bay.Block "parts", "manual", "how to", "diy", "jobs" and "salary".

Check every negative against your own address first. A shop on Central Avenue shouldn't block "central", and a shop near JFK shouldn't block "airport" or "JFK".

06 — Campaigns

Which campaigns does an auto repair shop need?

We recommend up to three campaigns with separate budgets: a stopped car needs someone to answer now, a known job needs a reason to trust you, and maintenance is a front door to the inspection.

CampaignTypical searchesWhat the ad must doCount as the win
Stopped car"mechanic near me", "car won't start"Get a phone call, only during hours someone answersCar on your lot
Known job"brake repair", "transmission repair"Land on a page for that job, with your warranty and how you quoteClosed RO for that job, with its value
Maintenance"oil change", "state inspection near me"Book a time, and say what the visit includesNew customer, plus work approved after the check

On a $2,000 budget, run two. At LocaliQ's $6.42 median, $2,000 buys about 311 clicks a month, too few to split three ways. Our rule: start with stopped car and your best known job. Add maintenance when those two spend their full budget and you still have open hours, and if you must cut, cut maintenance first.

The known-job page is your side of the work. Eloari writes ad and landing page copy but doesn't offer web design, so your web provider publishes the page.

Set the ad schedule to your real hours, because a call at 8 p.m. that reaches voicemail costs as much as one you book.

07 — Local Services Ads

Can auto repair shops use Local Services Ads?

Yes. Google's category list includes Auto Repair Shop, Brake Shop, Oil Change Service and Transmission Shop, but Google states that its Verified badge "is currently unavailable for verticals in the auto, beauty, and dining categories" (Google Local Services Help, November 3, 2026). So don't buy Local Services Ads on the promise of a badge.

Local Services Ads are ads at the top of Google that charge for a lead rather than a click. Check your own ZIP inside the sign-up, because we found no public list of cities by auto category. Run them beside Search and compare the two by cost per closed RO. More on our Local Services Ads management page.

08 — Reviews

Do reviews affect a repair shop's Google Ads?

Yes, most directly in Local Services Ads: Google says "star ratings and number of reviews affect how your business is ranked" there, alongside average response time (Local Services Help, November 3, 2026). Those reviews live in your Google Business Profile, so one profile feeds your ads and your map listing.

Google also says "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking" (Business Profile Help, November 3, 2026). Link the profile to Google Ads as a location asset, and a Search ad can show your address and distance, which matters to a driver with a stopped car. Ask for the review when the customer picks up the car, and answer the bad ones in public.

09 — The rules

What rules limit auto repair ads?

Some repair rules reach the ad itself. Since October 1, 2025, California's 16 CCR 3371.2 requires any internet ad for auto repair to show the firm name, the Bureau of Automotive Repair registration number and a phone number matching the Bureau's records.

WhereThe ruleWhat it means for the ad
CaliforniaThose three items in every internet ad (16 CCR 3371.2)Put them on the ad and the page. A call-tracking number may not match the Bureau's records (our reading), so ask the Bureau before using one.
FloridaOver $150, the shop prepares a written estimate, diagnostic work included, before starting unless the customer opts out in writing (F.S. 559.905)A low-price diagnostic offer doesn't skip the form once the job will pass $150. Say so on the page.
TexasBexar County emissions testing began November 1, 2026, for gasoline vehicles 2 to 24 years old (TxDMV), with the test capped at $18.50 (TCEQ)If you are certified to test, San Antonio drivers now need it at renewal.

This is a marketing guide, not legal advice. Confirm with your state's repair regulator before you run an offer.

10 — Tracking

How does a repair shop measure Google Ads?

Measure cost per closed repair order, then send those closed orders back to Google so it learns which clicks became paying cars. A call count can't do this: only 58% of calls to automotive businesses, dealers included, reach a person (Invoca, 2026).

StepWhereWhat to do and why
1. Answer rateCall logBefore changing any bid, count the ad calls nobody picked up. Techs under a car can't answer.
2. Source fieldShop softwareRecord how each new customer found you, along with the phone number, on the first repair order.
3. Closed ordersOffline importSend closed ROs and their value to Google, with the click ID or phone, every week.
4. JudgeMonthly reportCompare cost per closed RO and average RO by campaign, then move the budget.

What Eloari's plans cover: Starter includes conversion tracking, and call tracking starts at Growth, so on Starter use your phone system's missed-call log for step 1. Offline import isn't listed in a tier, so ask about it for your shop software during the review. Full setup: Google Ads conversion tracking.

11 — Video

Watch: the same leaks in one city

In New York City, "car inspection near me" and "car service near me" each get about 12,100 searches a month (Google Keyword Planner, October 2026), and, in our reading, the second often means a ride, not a repair. This video covers five mistakes New York shops make.

12 — Who runs it

Accounts are run by the founder, not passed to a junior after the sales call. Eloari is based in Davenport, Florida, and its founders currently manage more than $100,000 per week in advertising spend across client accounts, in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

13 — Pricing

How much does Google Ads management cost for a repair shop?

Typical U.S. agency pricing is a flat retainer of $1,000 to $5,000 a month for small and mid-sized accounts, or 10% to 20% of ad spend, most often 15%, plus setup fees of $2,500 to $10,000 (Eloari, main page, November 2026). Eloari charges a flat fee from $900 a month, with no setup fee, no percentage and no markup on media.

TierMonthly feeSuited toIncluded
Starter$900/moAd spend under $5,000/moGoogle or Meta, conversion tracking, ad copy, monthly report
Growth$1,500/moAd spend $5,000–$20,000/moGoogle or Meta, call tracking, landing page testing, ad copy, biweekly review
Full$2,500/moAd spend $20,000+/moGoogle and Meta, full tracking stack, landing page testing, weekly review

Eloari is a poor fit if nobody can answer inbound leads within the hour. You pay Google and Meta directly, own every account, and can leave with thirty days' notice.

15 — Questions

Google Ads for auto repair shops: questions

Do Google Ads work for auto repair shops?

They can, if the account is split by job and judged by closed repair orders. A U.S. auto repair lead cost a median $42.10 (LocaliQ, April 2025 to June 2026), against a median repair order of $649.88 (Tekmetric, through June 2026). We would check false searches and unanswered calls first.

How much should an auto repair shop spend on Google Ads?

Start near $2,000 to $3,000 a month, the range Eloari considers the minimum for reliable paid search data, then cap it by open technician hours. Divide the budget by your own cost per closed repair order to see how many cars it must bring, and check that your techs have the hours for them. Results vary, and no budget guarantees a car count.

What is the best advertising for an auto repair shop?

Search ads for drivers who need a repair now, and your own email or text list for customers you already have. In the 2026 Ratchet+Wrench survey, 42% of shops used Facebook ads and 30% used Google Ads.

Can auto repair shops get the Google Guaranteed badge?

Not at the moment, by Google's current wording. Google's Local Services help now calls the badge Google Verified and says it "is currently unavailable for verticals in the auto, beauty, and dining categories" (November 3, 2026). Auto Repair Shop and related categories remain on the Local Services Ads list.

Can an independent shop advertise BMW or Honda repair?

You can bid on the make as a keyword, since Google's trademark policy doesn't restrict trademarks used as keywords. Ad text can be restricted, and a confusing use is restricted, so say clearly in the ad and on the page that you are an independent shop.
