Google Ads for SaaS: bid on pipeline, not form fills
Google Ads works for a SaaS or B2B software company when the account is bought and judged on qualified pipeline, not on trial sign-ups or demo forms. In October 2026 the top Google bid for "payroll software for small business" was $196.96 and for "hvac software" $248.82, against $16.12 for "what is crm" (Google Keyword Planner, U.S.). Eloari runs Google Ads for software companies for a flat fee from $900 a month, with no setup fee, no contract, and every account in your company's name.
- Campaigns split by buyer intent: brand, category, alternatives, vertical.
- Qualified demos and closed deals from your CRM sent back to Google.
- Competitor campaigns that respect Google's trademark policy.
- Flat fee from $900 a month, never a percentage of spend.

01 — Click prices
How much does a Google Ads click cost for a SaaS company?
It depends on how narrow your buyer is. Across the U.S., the high end of Google's top-of-page bid ran from $20.38 for "church management software" to $248.82 for "hvac software" in October 2026, while the broad "crm software" topped out at $51.57 (Google Keyword Planner). Software built for one trade or one job tends to cost more per click than software for everyone.
The same software company can sit in a dozen auctions at once. U.S. figures, Google Keyword Planner, October 20, 2026:
| Search (U.S. monthly searches) | Top-of-page bid | Who is usually typing it |
|---|---|---|
| hvac software (590) | $40.00 – $248.82 | Contractor owner choosing a system |
| payroll software for small business (12,100) | $35.56 – $196.96 | Owner ready to switch payroll |
| best property management software (1,000) | $20.82 – $195.99 | Manager comparing a shortlist |
| zendesk alternatives (720) | $40.00 – $129.95 | Unhappy customer of a competitor |
| pest control software (390) | $15.00 – $110.13 | Trade owner, small market |
| email marketing software (135,000) | $50.00 – $102.07 | Mixed: free users to teams |
| hubspot alternatives (590) | $24.76 – $77.99 | Buyer who outgrew or priced out |
| field service management software (18,100) | $37.46 – $77.00 | Operations lead, category search |
| crm software (201,000) | $7.14 – $51.57 | Everyone, from solo to enterprise |
| dental practice management software (9,900) | $7.48 – $30.60 | Practice owner or office manager |
| what is crm (33,100) | $2.35 – $16.12 | Student or researcher, not buying |
| crm jobs (1,900) | $0.30 – $2.24 | Job seeker: a negative keyword |
Two gaps matter. "hvac software" gets only 590 searches a month but tops out at $248.82, almost five times "crm software" at $51.57, because every click is a contractor with real revenue at stake. And "what is crm" draws 33,100 searches at a low bid, which tells you most of that traffic is reading, not buying. The third column is our reading of search intent, not Google data.
Top-of-page bid is Google's estimate of what advertisers paid to show above the organic results; the low end approximates the 20th percentile and the high end the 80th. Cost per lead is ad spend divided by sign-ups, demo requests and calls. The LocaliQ 2026 search benchmarks do not break out software; their closest category, Business Services, averaged a $5.87 click, a 4.85% conversion rate and a $93.69 cost per lead, against $66.69 across all industries. For other categories, see how much Google Ads costs for a small business.
02 — Account structure
How should a SaaS company structure Google Ads?
By buyer intent, with one campaign per intent and its own landing page and its own definition of a result. A search for your brand, a search for your category and a search for a competitor's alternatives are three different buyers, and mixing them in one campaign lets the cheap clicks hide the expensive ones.
| Campaign | Example | Notes and what counts as a result |
|---|---|---|
| Brand | "yourproduct login" | Protects your name. Report it separately, since those buyers already knew you, and exclude login and support searches |
| Category | "field service management software" | The biggest and most expensive pool. Result: qualified demo, not every form |
| Alternatives | "hubspot alternatives" | Small volume, high intent. Lands on an honest comparison page. Result: qualified demo or activated trial |
| Vertical | "pest control software" | One industry, one page, one proof point. Often your best cost per customer |
| Problem | "track sales leads" | Lower intent. Run it only after the first four are profitable, and count it on pipeline, not sign-ups |
Negative keyword: a search term you tell Google never to show your ad for. In software the standard list includes jobs, salary, login, free, open source, certification and course, unless one of them matches what you sell. "crm jobs" alone gets 1,900 searches a month in the U.S. (Google Keyword Planner, October 2026).
03 — Competitor ads
Can a SaaS company bid on a competitor's brand name?
Yes, as a keyword. Google's trademark policy lists "using trademarks as keywords" among the uses it does not restrict. What Google does restrict is a direct competitor using the trademark in the ad itself, once the trademark owner files a complaint in a country where they hold the rights (Google Ads trademark policy, checked October 20, 2026).
| Use | Google's policy | What it means for your ads |
|---|---|---|
| Competitor name as a keyword | Not restricted. | You can bid on "zendesk alternatives" or "hubspot alternatives." Expect a low Quality Score and high clicks: the buyer was looking for someone else. |
| Competitor name in the headline or description | Restricted for a direct competitor after a complaint. | Write the ad about your own product: "Switch in a day, keep your data." Never put the rival's name in the ad copy. |
| Comparison landing page | Review looks at the ad, not only the landing page. | A fair "us vs them" page is where the comparison lives. Keep claims true and dated; misleading comparisons can still be a legal problem. |
| Integration or reseller ads | Allowed exceptions for resellers, compatible products and informational pages, if the ad and page make the relationship clear. | If you integrate with Salesforce, an ad about the integration can be allowed. Say "works with," not "official." |
This is our reading of Google's policy for advertising, not legal advice; have your own counsel approve comparison claims.
04 — Measurement
Why do SaaS Google Ads need offline conversions?
Because the form is not the sale, and your sales cycle can outlast Google's memory. Google Ads counts a conversion only inside the conversion window, which defaults to 30 days after the click and can be set from 1 to 90 days; a change to the window is not applied to past conversions (Google Ads Help, October 2026). A deal that closes on day 120 never reaches the bidding at all.
Offline conversion: a result recorded in your CRM, such as a qualified demo or a closed deal, uploaded to Google Ads and matched to the ad click. GCLID: the Google click ID you store with each lead so that match is possible. Enhanced conversions for leads: the same match made with a hashed email or phone number, which Google calls an upgraded version of offline conversion import.
Two 2026 changes matter. Starting June 15, 2026, offline conversion and enhanced-conversions-for-leads uploads moved to Google's Data Manager API and were blocked in the Google Ads API, so older custom scripts can stop working without warning. And Google's Data Manager connector for Salesforce and HubSpot imports only the last 14 days of data on its first run (Google Ads Help, checked October 20, 2026).
| CRM stage | How Google should see it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Trial started or demo requested | Secondary conversion, tracked but not bid on | Cheap to get and easy to fake. Bidding on it buys students, competitors and free users. |
| Qualified demo held or trial activated | Primary conversion, with a value | Usually happens inside the window, and it is the first stage that predicts revenue. |
| Opportunity created | Primary, higher value, if it lands inside the window | Teaches Google which searches produce deals, not meetings. |
| Closed-won | Uploaded with first-year contract value when it closes inside 90 days | Longer cycles still belong in your own reporting, matched by GCLID, even when Google can no longer count them. |
Eloari's rule is that tracking is installed and verified before any spend begins. For a software company that means the click ID reaches the CRM record and at least one stage after the form is sent back to Google before the first category campaign goes live.
05 — Trial or demo
Should SaaS Google Ads push a free trial or a demo?
Push the step your sales model can close. A self-serve product with a low monthly price should send clicks to a trial and count activation; a sales-led product with an annual contract should send clicks to a demo and count the demo that was held and qualified. Running both offers on one landing page splits the budget and blurs the data.
| Your model | Typical signal | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Self-serve, card at sign-up | Paid conversion within days | Trial offer. Send the first payment back to Google with its value. |
| Self-serve, no card | Many sign-ups, few activate | Trial offer, but bid on a defined activation event, never on sign-ups. |
| Sales-led, annual contract | Demo, then weeks of follow-up | Demo offer with one qualifying question on the form, such as team size. |
| Pre-revenue or no sales team | No closed deals to learn from | Not ready for paid search management. Prove the sale first. |
06 — Budget
How much should a SaaS company spend on Google Ads?
Enough to buy a useful number of qualified demos in your most valuable intent, which is usually more than one month of the national averages suggests. Roughly $2,000 to $3,000 a month in ad spend is the floor for paid search to produce reliable data; with category clicks above $40, a smaller budget should start with brand, alternatives and one vertical.
A worked example at the LocaliQ 2026 Business Services average: $5,000 of monthly ad spend at $93.69 per lead is about 53 leads (5,000 ÷ 93.69). If one in three becomes a qualified demo, that is about 18 demos at roughly $280 each. The one-in-three rate is an assumption for the arithmetic, not a benchmark; your CRM supplies the real one. Judge it against your close rate and contract value.
07 — Watch
Filter the leads before you pay for them
In this Eloari video, five filters cut junk leads before the form: the searches you buy, a price in the ad, Google's "More qualified" lead form setting (the default is "More volume"), one qualifying question, and a sixty-minute reply rule (Google Ads Help, October 2026). For software, the same logic separates students and free users from buyers.

09 — Pricing
How much does Google Ads management cost for a SaaS company?
By Eloari's own survey of U.S. agency pricing (see the main page, October 2026), flat retainers for small and mid-sized accounts typically run $1,000 to $5,000 a month, percentage pricing 10% to 20% of ad spend (most often 15%), and setup fees $2,500 to $10,000. Eloari charges a flat fee from $900 a month, with no setup fee, no percentage and no markup on media.
| Tier | Monthly fee | Suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $900/mo | Ad spend under $5,000/mo |
| Growth | $1,500/mo | Ad spend $5,000–$20,000/mo |
| Full | $2,500/mo | Ad spend $20,000+/mo |
Judge any fee against the budget. At $5,000 of ad spend, the $1,500 Growth fee is 30%; at $20,000, the $2,500 Full fee is 12.5%, where a 15% agency would charge $3,000 and earn more every time your clicks get pricier. You pay Google directly, and the account, the conversion history and the CRM connection stay yours if you leave.

11 — Questions
SaaS Google Ads questions
Do Google Ads work for SaaS?
They do when the account is built around buyer intent and measured on qualified demos or paying customers. Google captures people already searching for a category or an alternative, which is the closest thing to a ready buyer in software. Accounts that count every trial sign-up as a win usually end up buying students, job seekers and free users.
What is a good cost per lead for SaaS on Google Ads?
There is no single number, because a lead is worth what your close rate and contract value make it. The LocaliQ 2026 benchmarks have no software category; Business Services, the closest, averaged $93.69 per lead. Set your target from cost per qualified demo and cost per customer instead.
Should I bid on competitor keywords?
Usually yes, in a separate campaign with its own budget. Google does not restrict trademarks used as keywords, but it does restrict a direct competitor's trademark in the ad text after a complaint. Expect higher click prices and lower click-through, and send those clicks to an honest comparison page.
How long is too long a sales cycle for Google Ads?
No cycle is too long, but Google can only count conversions up to 90 days after the click, and the default is 30 days. If deals close later than that, optimize to an earlier stage that happens inside the window, such as a qualified demo, and track closed revenue in your CRM.
Should a SaaS company run Meta ads or Google Ads first?
If the budget supports one channel, start with Google, because it captures demand that already exists. Meta creates demand and can work for products with a broad, visual use case, or for retargeting site visitors. Compare cost per qualified demo from each, not cost per click.
How long until SaaS Google Ads show results?
Campaigns usually launch around day 14, after tracking and the CRM connection are verified. The first real optimization decisions come between day 21 and day 30, and meaningful improvement usually shows in month two or three. Closed revenue from those clicks can take longer, depending on your sales cycle.
